A Neighborhood Design

Silvergate elevates the safety and care of residents to new heights with a unique “neighborhood” design that offers a secure layout and decreases stress among residents.  The integrated floorplan layout of the Memory Cares Suites at Silvergate prevents residents wandering and encourages them to become more social. Residents feel more comfortable, better understand their surroundings, and are welcomed by dedicated caregivers who are always within earshot and able to maintain visual contact with residents at all times. If a resident needs attention, our experienced staff is there to help at a moment’s notice.

Silvergate’s approach to memory care was conceptualized by the Owner of Silvergate Retirement Residences, Mr. David Petree, after losing a very close family friend to Alzheimer’s disease in the late 1990s. At the time of his friend’s struggles, Mr. Petree observed that memory care was limited to large, sterile, and isolated dormitory-style skilled nursing facilities, or small, cold board and care facilities, neither of which adequately addressed the needs of residents.

Mr. Petree’s close friend lived in a large skilled nursing facility, and as he visited his friend, Mr. Petree witnessed the problems associated with long hallways and isolated units first-hand. Through his hands-on experience and after consulting with physicians, Mr. Petree determined that a combination of both types of facilities would offer the best care those with dealing with memory loss, and the Silvergate Memory Care Suites concept was born. 

The Memory Care Suites at Silvergate incorporate the best of both worlds by combining a small and intimate home-like setting with an industry-leading resident-to-staff ratio.  What’s more, the socialization opportunities arising from thoughtfully planned activities designed specifically for dementia care are second to none at Silvergate. With a distinctive “neighborhood” design for memory care – a first of its kind in the Southern California region – Silvergate has enjoyed more than 15 successful years of providing care to residents living with memory loss and their families.
